Local resident donates $250,000 to Emerson Hospital’s new diabetes center

(CONCORD, Mass., June 28, 2007)--Concord resident Jay Agarwal, Ph.D., recently donated $250,000 to fund the Elizabeth Smith Agarwal Diabetes Center, which will be located at Emerson Hospital’s new Center for Specialty Care on Baker Avenue in Concord. The center is named after Dr. Agarwal’s late wife of 58 years, who was a diabetic patient at Emerson.

“We have lived in the area since 1969, and Emerson always provided great care both to my wife and me,” said Dr. Agarwal. The Diabetes Center will be dedicated to outpatient care, education, medication management and complications monitoring for area diabetes patients. “Diabetes is a dreadful disease, but with proper management it can be controlled,” said Dr. Agarwal. “A gift to Emerson was the right idea.”

“Emerson Hospital is so appreciative of Dr. Agarwal’s generous gesture of support,” said Christine Schuster, Emerson Hospital president and CEO. “We are all very excited about expanding our outreach into the community with the opening this summer of the Elizabeth Smith Agarwal Diabetes Center under the direction of endocrinologist Dr. Aldona Finkle. The successful management of diabetes is dependent on the knowledge and active involvement of the patient, together with the expertise of healthcare professionals and other supporting individuals. Dr. Agarwal’s donation will directly benefit our community’s diabetes patients.”

Dr. Agarwal, who moved from Pittsburgh, Pa., to Concord in 1969 and then lived in Sudbury from 1982 to 1998 before moving back to Concord, has a son and daughter and two grandsons. He holds a doctorate in chemical engineering and consults for major companies on metals, minerals and energy. Prior to his current position as vice president of technology assessment at CRA International, Dr. Agarwal worked for U.S. Steel, Kennecott Copper and Amax. A sports fan, Dr. Agarwal plays golf and tennis and enjoys traveling, music and the theater. He is a member of both First Parish Churches in Concord and Sudbury.

Emerson Hospital’s new specialty center, located less than a mile from the hospital, will bring together many of Emerson’s talented specialists in one convenient location. The center will feature new technology, including hyperbaric oxygen chambers for treatment of complex wounds, and PET/CT scanning, which is a sophisticated diagnostic imaging tool that is used to detect and monitor cancer and other serious health conditions.
