Emerson Hospital displays artwork of local community members

(CONCORD, Mass., May 27, 2008)--Patients and visitors at Emerson Hospital can view local talent in the current exhibition of paintings in the hospital’s main hallway.

On display in the Emerson gallery are paintings by Bedford resident and retired public school art teacher Louise Banner. Her approach to her art is typically nonrepresentational, and she experiments with the question “what if?” with the artwork now on display at Emerson. To achieve the finished product, Banner soaked acid-free paper just long enough to be able to model it on top of a canvas. Once the paper was in place, she adhered it to the canvas to dry. She then added various materials to change the absorption characteristics or texture of the paper. The first layers of paint are transparent, and she worked from light to dark colors. In order to achieve the depth of color typical with watercolors or oil paints, these displayed artworks contain up to 20 layers of acrylic paint and medium.

Also on display are photographs by Chelmsford resident and commercial photographer Robert Moll, who earned degrees from the University of California Los Angeles and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., and who has more than 40 years of experience in advertising photography. His images are an attempt to transform subject matter into pure design. He is a faculty member of the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Mass. Moll also teaches classes in digital photography in the community education division of Chelmsford High School.

Visitors to the hospital may purchase the artwork, and 25 percent of the sale price goes to the hospital. Volunteers with the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary curate the artwork and photography submissions. This year, the Auxiliary celebrates its 40th anniversary of curating the artwork. For information on purchasing any artwork, contact the community services department at Emerson Hospital at 978-287-3200.
