Emerson diabetes education program receives recognition
(CONCORD, Mass., June 4, 2008)--Emerson Hospital’s diabetes self-management education program was awarded Education Recognition by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for providing high-quality education services to the patients it serves. Programs that achieve Recognition status have a team of knowledgeable health professionals who provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management. The program was originally awarded this recognition in July 2002.
“This recognition celebrates Emerson’s comprehensive education program, which is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment,” said Christine Schuster, Emerson Hospital president and CEO.
The Association’s Education Recognition Certificate ensures that education programs meet national standards for diabetes self-management education programs. These standards were developed and tested by the National Diabetes Advisory Board in 1983 and were revised by the diabetes community in 1994 and 2000.
Programs apply for Recognition voluntarily. Education Recognition status is verified by an official certificate from ADA and is awarded for three years.
According to the American Diabetes Association, 20.8 million people in the United States have diabetes. Each day, approximately 4,110 people are diagnosed with diabetes. Emerson Hospital’s certified diabetes education program, which is almost always covered by health insurance, serves an important role by helping people learn more about their disease and what they can do to manage diabetes and its complications. Through the program, patients learn how to take responsibility for their own day-to-day care and are taught how to monitor blood glucose levels. Patients can also explore options for using an insulin pump and learn how to manage diabetes during pregnancy.
The American Diabetes Association is the nation’s leading non-profit health organization supporting diabetes research, advocacy, and information for health professionals, patients, and the public. Founded in 1940, the Association has an area office in every state and conducts programs in communities nationwide.
