1/6/17: Emerson Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Offers Heart Disease Prevention Program this Winter

Emerson Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program will offer a 12-week prevention course for cardiac metabolic syndrome, beginning on Wednesday, January 25, from 5-7 p.m. The program is designed for people at risk for heart disease or type II diabetes.

“We want to aggressively treat people before they have an ‘event’ – a heart attack, bypass surgery or a stent,” said Ginny Dow, RN, BSN, BC, CCRP, manager of the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Program.  “People with metabolic syndrome are at greatly increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and diabetes,” said Dow. “Excess central body fat and physical inactivity are the most prevalent factors that predispose people to this syndrome.”

Prospective program participants must have at least three of the following risk factors: waist circumference greater than 40” for males and 35” for females, blood pressure higher than 130/85, HDL lower than 40 for males and 50 for females, triglycerides greater than 150, and fasting blood sugar level greater than 100.

The program includes an hour of supervised exercise with an exercise physiologist and a cardiac certified registered nurse, educational support, and nutritional counseling. Program participants also have access to a social worker and dietitian who run the weekly support group/education sessions. The program focuses on behavior modification for healthy eating and exercise.  Call to schedule an intake as some preprogram testing is required, such as labs and a stress test.

The cost of the program is $400. For more information, please call Emerson’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at 978-287-3732.
