Peter M. Barkin, M.D. has been honored by his peers of the Middlesex Central District Medical Society as the district’s 2015 Community Clinician of the Year, an honor recognizing his contributions and professionalism as a physician.
Board certified in internal medicine, with subspecialties in critical care medicine and pulmonary medicine, Dr. Barkin has been medical director of the Critical Care Unit at Emerson Hospital since 1990 and Chief of Critical Care Service since 2000. He was appointed to the additional post of Chief of Pulmonary Service at the hospital in 2013. Currently serving as Secretary of the Medical Staff, he has also served the hospital as a member of its board of directors and as Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Barkin received a bachelor’s degree cum laude from Harvard College and a master’s degree from the Harvard School of Public Health prior to earning his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He has also been a health policy analyst in the Office of the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
A published author on various aspects of pulmonary medicine, Dr. Barkin is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Surgeons, a member of the American Thoracic Society and the Massachusetts Thoracic Society, and since 2011 has served as a member of the Education Committee for the Massachusetts Thoracic Society. He resides in Weston.
The Community Clinician of the Year Award was established in 1998 by the Massachusetts Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of the Society’s 20 district medical societies who has made significant contributions to his or her patients and the community and who stands out as a leading caregiver. The Middlesex Central District is comprised of nearly 300 physicians who live and work in nine communities in central Middlesex County.
The Massachusetts Medical Society, with more than 24,000 physicians and student members, is dedicated to educating and advocating for the patients and physicians of Massachusetts.
