At Emerson Hospital’s annual Physician Recognition Dinner held recently, Robin Schoenthaler, MD, received the 2018 Physician Quality Champion Award. A radiation oncologist at Mass General Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital-Bethke since 1997, Dr. Schoenthaler has dedicated her career to improving the lives of her patients who have cancer. In addition to treating patients, she serves as the Director of Medical Education at Emerson Hospital.
Dr. Schoenthaler has a steadfast commitment to patient quality and enhancing their lives. She has a particular interest in treating women with breast cancer and also treats women with gynecologic cancers. Often seen intently listening to her patients and developing close relationships with them and their loved ones, Dr. Schoenthaler is a mentor to new physicians in how to humanize a cancer diagnosis and help patients discover a fulfilling life despite their disease.
“Dr. Schoenthaler inspires her patients, their caregivers and everyone she touches with her compassionate approach and devotion to outstanding patient care,” said Christine Schuster, President and CEO of Emerson Hospital. “Patients return to visit Dr. Schoenthaler years after they were diagnosed with cancer because of the compassionate care she provided them during a challenging time in their lives.”
"I serve my patients in the best ways I know how - with a focus on education, compassion, communication, and using the latest advances in radiation treatments,” said Dr. Schoenthaler. "It is humbling to receive this award from Emerson, where providing compassionate care is intrinsic to how every clinician approaches their patients. It is an honor to work with such extraordinary colleagues who always put the needs of their patients first.”
Dr. Schoenthaler received her medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine and completed her residency at the University of California San Francisco. She is board-certified in radiation oncology. In addition, she has won multiple awards as an essayist, particularly in the field of medical memoir, and has had numerous lay articles published in the national press, including The Boston Globe. She is a long-time resident of Arlington where she raised her two sons.
