Nutritional Counseling

Nutritional Counseling See More
Good nutrition is a cornerstone of good health. That is why Emerson Hospital’s Department of Nutrition Services offers a variety of nutritional counseling services and resources—whether you are an inpatient, outpatient or a member of the community.

Our expert nutrition counseling services are provided by registered dietitians (RDs) with degrees in clinical nutrition and dietetics. To maintain their national registration and state licensure, dietitians must participate in ongoing professional education—so you can be sure you are getting the most up-to-date information and guidance about diet and nutrition.

Inpatient nutrition services

Good nutrition helps you heal from surgery or illness. If you’re hospitalized at Emerson, our clinical dietitians conduct a comprehensive nutritional assessment to make sure you are well-nourished, designing an individualized care plan to meet your specific medical and lifestyle needs, and provide nutrition education, as needed.

In addition, weekly group lectures on nutrition, wellness and health are offered to all inpatients on the Behavioral Health Unit.

Outpatient nutritional counseling

One-on-one nutritional counseling in a private, confidential setting is available at the Emerson Hospital Nutrition Clinic in Concord, and at the Westford Health Center.

Our registered dietitians are qualified to address specialty areas, including:
  • Management of weight, cholesterol, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes and gastrointestinal disorders
  • Oncology (cancer) nutrition
  • Wellness nutrition
  • Pediatric nutrition
Please note that a physician referral is required for outpatient nutritional counseling, and services are covered by most insurance plans (check with your insurance plan about coverage for your specific needs).

The Mass General Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital – Bethke

It is important to remain nourished during cancer treatment. If you are undergoing radiation and/or chemotherapy at The Mass General Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital – Bethke, you are encouraged to meet with one of our registered dietitians to help optimize your nutritional status. Your dietitian can also help with dietary strategies to minimize side effects, such as nausea, that can occur during cancer therapy.

Home care

Our dietitians work closely with Emerson Home Care nurses to identify any patients in need of nutritional intervention. Dietitians conduct evaluations over the phone or during home visits, including with family members, and provide  appropriate education and recommendations for improving each patient’s nutritional status.

Addiction rehabilitation program

Patients involved in Emerson’s Addiction Rehabilitation Program meet with a dietitian in a group setting twice a month. The dietitian provides guidance on ways to improve diet for overall better health.

Other Emerson Programs

Our programs in Cardiac Rehabilitation and in the Center for Weight Loss Program, have nutritional support for patients in those programs.

Community outreach

Emerson’s dietitians are involved in many community programs, offering lectures to local women’s groups, elder programs, school programs, various support groups and local corporations. Dietitians also participate in many community health fairs.

Community health and wellness classes

Our registered dietitians also teach a variety of nutrition-related programs at the Steinberg Wellness Center for Mind and Body at Emerson in Concord.
