Auxiliary of Emerson Hospital Learns About Rehabilitation and Sports Therapies

6/1/2016

In May, the Auxiliary of Emerson Hospital presented an educational program and light dinner at the Emerson Hospital Center for Rehabilitative and Sports Therapies, Concord, for Auxilians and their guests. The event provided a unique opportunity to tour Emerson’s state-of-the art rehabilitation center and learn firsthand from Terrie Enis, Director of Rehabilitation Services, about the comprehensive and specialized services offered to patients at the rehab center and the adjacent Dr. Robert C. Cantu Concussion Center, truly meeting the needs of Emerson’s communities.

The Auxiliary has been a steadfast supporter of the Rehabilitative Center and the Cantu Concussion Center, providing funding for important patient programs.  Some of the programs the Auxiliary has helped fund include baseline concussion testing for teens, the unique neuro-gym, and the therapeutic aquatic pool at the Rehab Center, the only one of its caliber outside of Boston with an underwater treadmill and camera so that a patient’s gait can be evaluated by a physical therapist while in the pool.

Services at the rehab center include physical, occupational and speech language therapy.  Terrie described how concussions not only involve sports-related injuries, but also those due to regular daily living, such as falls and accidents.

Betty Ann Killian, Auxiliary President, concluded the event by saying, “The Auxiliary is so pleased to support Emerson’s Rehabilitative and Concussion Centers. We know that these therapeutic services benefit all in our communities, from toddlers receiving speech therapy, to our teenagers involved in sports, and others who may be suffering from neurological diseases or are recovering from accidents, illnesses or surgeries. “
