Emerson Hospital Awarded Highest Grade for Patient Safety

5/15/2019

Emerson Hospital has again been honored with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group. Emerson has now earned thirteen consecutive As for Safety since 2013. The results are available to the public and can be used to make an informed decision as to where people choose to receive hospital care for themselves or family members.

Leapfrog calculates the Hospital Safety Score under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel using publicly available data from more than 2,600 acute care hospitals nationwide on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. Hospitals are assigned an A, B, C, D, or F for their overall performance. Just 32% of hospitals in the country receive an A.

Emerson received particularly high marks in a variety of areas, including having a strong culture of patient safety, experienced nurses, and reducing safety risks throughout the hospital. Safety performance measures are collected from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In addition, secondary data is used from the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey.

“We are pleased to have earned another A for patient safety from Leapfrog,” said Christine Schuster, President and CEO of Emerson Hospital. “However, we do not rest on this honor. Providing all of our patients with the best and safest medical care possible will always remain our primary focus.”
