Clough Surgical Center

The Clough Surgical Center provides advanced medical procedures and compassionate care in an innovative facility.

General Surgery

Emerson Hospital’s surgery department offers experienced physicians who are trained in the most advanced procedures. They are supported by state-of-the-art operating suites, imaging technology, expert anesthesiologists and an outstanding nursing staff. Surgeons specialize in laparoscopic techniques—minimally invasive approaches that use smaller incisions than traditional surgery and are associated with shorter hospital stays, less pain and quicker recovery. Approximately 75% of the surgery performed at Emerson does not require a hospital stay.

Emerson’s general surgeons diagnose and treat disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, the breast and the head and neck. They offer expertise in a wide range of surgeries including:

  • Gallbladder removal
  • Hernia repair
  • Spleen removal
  • Appendectomy
  • Ulcer surgery
  • Treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

  • Sentinel node biopsy, breast biopsy
  • Lumpectomy, mastectomy
  • Removal of breast duct

  • Colon surgery for cancer, colitis and other conditions
  • Minimally invasive colon surgery
  • Rectal surgery for cancer, hemorrhoids and other conditions

Head and Neck

  • Removal of the thyroid gland
  • Tracheotomy
  • Surgery on the cervical lymph nodes

Orthopedic surgeons work closely with Emerson’s expert anesthesiologists, who provide clinical anesthesia services for patients. Available at the hospital 24 hours a day, anesthesiologists also consult on pain management for those with chronic pain.

Support Services and Groups

Emerson offers community health and wellness programs and classes designed to support patients with a wide range of health issues. The Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster workshop is available to all surgical patients. Please inquire at your pre-surgical testing appointment.

Emerson’s Lund Community Health Library offers information that can help individuals understand and cope with the diagnosis of a medical condition and learn about the latest treatment methods. The library offers resources including medical journals, textbooks, health newsletters and medical videos. It also provides reliable scientific information about many complementary therapies. A medical librarian and a team of experienced and dedicated volunteers are available to help visitors.

Located on the second floor of the John Cuming Building, adjacent to the Mass General Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital - Bethke, the library is open to all members of the community. For more information, please call 978-287-3090.
